-FROM WAX TO JEWELRY-
4days workshop with Gabi Veit
27,28,29 & 1 April 2015
Duration: 19 hours
In this workshop we will experience a different approach and an alternative way of working with wax. Wax gives us the opportunity to make jewelry without professional tools and machineries. Because of its nature it offers plenty of possibilities to work with, such as modeling, carving, melting etc.
Throughout the workshop we will also go through different experiences, playing with wax, creating, trying, failing, recreating, selecting...
Several exercises will give us a lot of fun and help us go deeper in our personal approach to jewelry.
After that, we will select some of the pieces and have them casted in silver, brass or copper.
At the end of the workshop we will discuss the results and make our final comments on our creations.

We will take an object and deconstruct it by various ways depending on the nature of the object: sawing, breaking, hammering’ tearing…etc and reconstruct it into a jewelry piece. We will make experimentations with the forms while taking apart and rejoining. We will seek for creative solutions to reconstruct the piece and re-contextualize it on body.
This workshop is a conceptual one and basic jewelry making skills are required. We will introduce some connection solutions during the workshop. The notion of fusion denotes the combination or blending of two or more elements. It can also be the start of a journey, whereby the synthesis of processes, materials and ideas provide pathways for the creation of new and innovative objects.
During the three-day workshop participants will build knowledge and explore the parameters of fusion both as a topic and as a technique, which will result in the culmination of a finished jewellery object. There will also be the opportunity for discussions and investigations into personal methodologies around the aesthetics of fusion in relation to contemporary jewellery practices. Participants can also consider the ways in which fusion can be explored through various methods, techniques and materials, for instance, a fusion of metal, plastic, glass and ephemera/ collected material.
The concept of fusion is open, participants can choose to investigate it through various methods, techniques, materials and contexts. The outcome is to produce a jewellery object, which explores the ideas and processes of fusion, incorporating personal indoctrinations and ultimately manifested as an original artwork.
Peer-oriented discussions and a group critique of finished objects will contribute to the completion of the fusion process and further assist in examining how we read the object. The workshop will also provide the possibility to examine methods of display and documentation through multi-disciplinary approaches.

" ... let us examine the idea that a work of art cannot be considered a snapshot, an object that was finished when its creator had decided, but an unstable situation, a story with countless versions that begins the moment the viewer gets in touch with the artwork . I 'm not referring only to narrative works that present a " frame" of a real or fictional story but also to infigurative creations , where shapes , colors , levels and whatever else the artist has at his or her disposal , have been exploited in such a way that we become a part of an evolving situation.
Starting from a point and its travel in space, from colors and shapes, we will tour the sphere of creation and the "reading" of creations as a dynamic phenomenon , using all our senses . On this trip we will be accompanied by the lessons of W. Kandinsky, P. Klee, J. Itten, as well as my own observations as a painter, a teacher and a student. " E. Papapostolou
